Building Progress 2023

Our Shipping Container Residence

Dear readers,

It has been some time since we commenced construction of the residence. Regular readers will know we paused the building to do some much-needed erosion mitigation to the property’s northern boundary. With that critical task behind us, we’re excited to share updates on the residence.

The residence is designed using four shipping containers, which we’ve placed on pre-installed pillars. The floor space between the containers forms a plus shape, which has already been concreted.

Although changes may occur due to available construction materials and budget, here is a breakdown of the design:

  • Two Containers will be transformed into two rooms, each featuring a bathroom and closet space. This will provide comfortable and private living quarters.
  • Two more containers will be altered to form a community area. This space will be dedicated to helping our community members with various interests and needs. Whether it’s English lessons, agricultural advice, hygiene tips, cooking classes, or any other assistance we can offer, this area will be open to everyone.

As for the current status of the building, we’re at the frame stage with the roof installed. However, there’s still quite a bit to do:

  • Windows and Doors: These need to be installed to secure the structure and provide natural light.
  • Internal Linings and Amenities: The interiors of the containers need to be lined and equipped with the necessary amenities.
  • Electrical and Plumbing: Installation of electrical systems and plumbing is a crucial next step.
  • Appliances: Finally, we need to install appliances to make the spaces functional and comfortable.

This project is about more than just building a residence; it’s about creating a hub for learning and community support. We’re excited about the progress and can’t wait to share more updates as we move forward.

Stay tuned for more, and as always, thank you for your support and interest.
